Stroud Township was founded as part of Northampton County on Jan. 22, 1817. That was the 41st year after the USA declared its independence from the United Kingdom of Great Britain on July 4, 1776. The president at that time was James Madison, but James Monroe took office on March 4, 1817.
From the early years, when residents learned to protect themselves from unfriendly Indians, to the boom years when the railroads brought growth, jobs and created the bustling village of Spragueville and started the tourist business, Stroud was primarily farm country, especially in Cherry Valley.
Retired Stroudsburg High School history teacher Jacqualyn James takes readers on journeys of discovery, bringing to life the stories of people who helped build the community: the Strouds, the Boys, the Hollinsheads, the Kautz family, the Pattersons and more.
