The Stroud Mansion houses the Elizabeth D. Walters Library, which is open to the public and available during Stroud Mansion hours. Research and library fees apply. The library has an extensive and unique collection of genealogical materials, including family files, census reports, church records, cemetery listings, newspaper clippings and more. The library also houses a wide variety of general reference materials on state and local history.
Family files: More than 1,500 files containing correspondence and genealogical information on Monroe County families, from “Abbott” to “Zimmerman.”
Monroe County church records and files: Including birth, baptism, marriage and death records.
Newspapers: Various newspaper titles from 1840 to 1999.
United States Census records: 1790 to 1930
Funeral home records, including:
  • Lanterman and Allen – 1907 to 1969
  • Dunkleberger and Westbrook – 1932 to 1972
  • Daniel Warner – 1950 to 1962
  • Kresge – 1892 to 1985
  • Casper Buck – 1896 to 1919
  • Richard Klofach – 1972 to 1986
Monroe County cemetery listings: More than 95 cemeteries, indexed by surname.
Scrapbooks: Indexed marriage and death announcements.
Monroe County Death Records: September 1893 to March 1905.
City directories and phone books: 1892 to present.
Subject archive files: Local and regional history on a variety of topics including area businesses and industries, resorts and general interest.
Extensive photograph and postcard collection featuring Monroe County people, events and scenes.
Maps and atlases: Includes the Beers and Sanborn maps.
Various primary documents, such as indentures and family Bibles.


Using the Library
Visitors are welcome to use the library. Resource materials may only be used in the library. They may not be removed from the premises.
  • Reading fee – $5 a day for non-members (MCHA members have free use of the library.)
  • Photocopies — 25 cents per page
  • Microfilm printouts — 50 cents per page.

NOTE: The Walters Research Library is located on the first floor of Stroud Mansion, and is wheelchair accessible through a ramp at the Ninth Street entrance. The Gift Shop, Victorian parlor and changing exhibit space are also located on the first floor. Other floors are not wheelchair accessible.

Staff research is available if you’re not able to visit the library.
Research requests
MUST be written and submitted by mail. A payment for the initial hour of research must be included. No research requests will be accepted by e-mail or phone.
Our research fees:
  • $20/hour for members
  • $25/hour for non-members
