The tradition
of bringing evergreen boughs and even whole
trees indoors during the Winter Solstice began
in Europe well before reliable written records.
These early indoor trees, however, were not
adorned with fanciful decorations. Relatively
modern Christmas tree traditions began in the
16th Century, with the Protestant reformer
Martin Luther being credited with first
decorating a small evergreen tree with candles.

The Lenni
Lenape were the first inhabitants of the Pocono
Mountains area. Long before European settlers
called Monroe County home, these Native
Americans occupied the land. Indeed, the name
Lenni Lenape translates into “the original
peoples,” and the term Pocono in the native
Lenape tongue means “a river between two
mountains.” Many times, the Lenape were referred
to as Delaware because they lived along the
Delaware River. The Wolf Clan (also known as
Munsee or Minsi) occupied land in what is now
Monroe County. Their area stretched northward
along the Delaware River from the point where
the Lehigh River meets the Delaware in what is

A heated
special election in 1836 determined the county
seat for the newly formed Monroe County. Three
towns were suggested to serve as the new
county’s seat: Dutotsburg (now Delaware Water
Gap), Kellersville in Hamilton Township, and
Stroudsburg. They were all considered and placed
on the ballot for a vote by the men of the area.
